Copper develops a protective oxide layer through natural weathering: bright copper for roughly the first year, shifting to brown tones over the following decade, and eventually settling into the green verdigris patina copper is known for after 20–30+ years. That patina layer is what protects the metal underneath. It is a feature, not wear.
